Facebook CMO’s Four Rules for Going Mobile

When Facebook went public in May 2012, it faced seriously questions over its ability to grow its mobile business. Two years later it generates 59% of its ad revenue from mobile and that momentum is expected to continue.

Underscoring that shift, the social network's first CMO, Gary Briggs, told the Business Marketing Association's annual conference in Chicago on Wednesday that a month and a half ago Facebook surpassed 1 billion active mobile users, a threshold he doesn't believe the company will ever get to on desktops.

The change is obviously dramatic and also totally conscious, which Mr. Briggs said was essential to go mobile. Here are his four must-dos to becoming an effective mobile marketer:

Apple Gets Beats for $3 Billion. Here’s Why They Should Keep It Ad-Free

Apple has agreed to buy headphone maker and streaming music service provider Beats Electronics for $3 billion, the company announced on Wednesday. Beats co-founders and music moguls Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre will join Apple as part of the deal.

News of the acquisition first leaked weeks ago and spurred speculation over Apple's motivations. With celebrity spokespeople including LeBron James and Nicki Minaj, Beats has cultivated the type of "cool" brand image commonly associated with Apple but that some consider to be on the wane since former Apple CEO Steve Jobs passed away.

It also has developed a piece of hardware-as-fashion that could play well into current Apple CEO Tim Cook's stated plan to enter the wearable-devices arms race.

Datalogix Raises $45M to Help Advertisers Track Offline Purchases

Datalogix, the analytics company best known for its ad partnerships with Facebook and Twitter, has just raised $45 million in equity financing from investors.

The 12-year-old Westminster, Colo.-based company takes sales data and makes it available for advertisers to anonymously target consumers online based on their offline purchase history. The data, which comes from people enrolled in loyalty programs, also allows digital ad sellers like Twitter and Facebook to measure the sales impact of their ads for marketers.

The data gets pretty granular, allowing advertisers to target new parents based on the specific size of diaper they've bought, for example, or people who buy a lot of a particular brand of soda.

Conde Nast Drafts an Internal ‘Magna Carta’ for Native Advertising

Conde Nast, publisher of Vogue and The New Yorker, has asked its editors and publishers to review a roughly 4,000-word document that lays out how the company will handle native advertising online, according to several Conde Nast executives.

The document's aim is to give publishers and editors who might clash over native ads a quick reference guide to solve any disputes, the executives say. "There are things in there editors won't like, and things in there that publishers won't like," one editor said.

In codifying its handling of the tactic -- an editor called the document a "Magna Carta" for native ads -- Conde Nast is breaking from rivals Hearst and Time Inc., which have avoided putting their policies on paper.
